Sir, - Quidnunc reports (Weekend, June 26th) that, according to Ruairi Quinn, we have a huge cash surplus and no idea what to do with it. His best suggestion is to spend it on the six applicant members of the EU in order to buy their stability, their votes and their markets.

Has he lost the entire run of himself?

Is he suddenly blind to the desperate needs and inadequacies on his own doorstep?

He should look first at the people on hospital and housing waiting lists, kids sleeping on the streets, teachers trying to handle overcrowded classes, parents of children who need remedial teaching - the list is endless.

By all means let us share our riches with poorer nations, as indeed we are obliged to, but Quinn's blinkered attitude is frightening. We need courageous, caring leadership from our politicians, not creeping Thatcherism from the Labour Party. - Yours, etc., Kevin Healy,
