Madam, - I agree with Fintan O'Toole's call for the media and political parties to let Jerry McCabe rest in peace (Opinion, February 21st). His column followed the failure of a Fine Gael motion of no confidence in Kerry mayor Toiréasa Ferris.
Repeatedly in the media a Sinn Féin member is asked to condemn the brutal killing of Garda McCabe; and when he or she doesn't, certain political parties and sections of the media exploit such a refusal to score political points.
I really wish Fine Gael, and others who relentlessly pursue this issue, would stop this expedient and undignified scrambling for the highest moral ground and let the man rest in peace. I would be hurt if I knew political parties and sections of the media were using the gruesome and unjustifiable killing of a member of my family for political advantage. How must Mrs Ann McCabe feel every time this issue is dragged up by some member of Fine Gael, the PDs or an interviewer or newspaper?
We must bear in mind that these men are serving their sentences, unlike the killers of hundreds of RUC and British army members who have been released early under the terms of the Belfast Agreement. - Yours, etc,
DANE TYGHE, Killeens, Wexford.
