Madam, - Liam Ó Géibheannaigh (October 15th) deplores the fact that Fine Gael members of the Oireachtas decided not to nominate a candidate to contest the presidential election. He cites Article 14 of the Constitution which invests the power to do so in members of the Oireachtas.

Surely even a cursory examination would show that in as much as Article 14 invests the power to nominate, it also invests the power not to nominate? Also it is indeed doubtful that it offends the spirit of the Constitution, or indeed fails to enhance democracy, when politicians exercise their constitutional rights - even if occasionally that choice is not to do something. - Yours, etc.,
