Sir, – Abortion is just another issue to most journalists, so they fail to understand just how serious a matter it is to pro-life supporters, and how betrayed we feel by Enda Kenny and Fine Gael. To me this betrayal is the obvious explanation for Fine Gael’s recent drop in opinion polls, and Fianna Fáil’s rise.

For people like me, the only choices in a general election are Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and pro-life Independents. I voted for Fine Gael last time out, because of the economic mess Fianna Fáil had made. Now that Fine Gael is set to renege on its pro-life promise, I will be crossing that party off my list.

That leaves Fianna Fáil and Independents. These are precisely the two groupings to register a rise in support in recent polls.

Given the tendency of media commentators to lazily dismiss us as “right-wing Catholics”, I would also like to put on record that I voted Labour all my adult life, until that party decided that legislating for abortion was a progressive and civilised thing to do. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Fianna Fáil’s rise in opinion polls at the expense of the Government parties is like blaming the fire brigade for getting your house wet while it burns and then going for a pint with the arsonist. – Yours, etc,
