Sir, - I refer to the article by Kevin O'Sullivan (The Irish Times, March 18th) concerning pollution of the river Liffey by Kildare County Council.

Anglers have observed many releases of partially treated sewage from the treatment plant at Leixlip over a period of almost 20 years. On some occasions these releases have been timed nicely to coincide with heavy water flows caused by electricity generation at Leixlip dam. This tends to disguise the fact that effluent is being discharged. It is not suggested that there is any collusion by the ESB.

Large-scale pollution occurred on February 25th last. On that occasion the ESB promptly responded to a request from Eastern Regional Fisheries Board staff and released water from Leixlip reservoir over a four-hour period and thus mitigated the effects of the pollution. - Yours, etc., Patrick O'Molloy,
