Sir, - In his letter (April 8th), Fr. David O Hanlon from Roma labels your correspondent Mr Grant a toady and our esteemed and exemplary President "cheap." Do these and his other comments come from an absolutely sinless soul, a stainless conscience? And do they "admirably" represent the love advocating teachings of his Lord?

I wonder how this cleric would have reacted to the son of a lowly carpenter in Nazareth of questionable birth who ministered among prostitutes, illiterate fishermen and tax collectors, yet claimed categorically to speak with Divine authority? Or to His mother, who had conceived Him during her betrothal to a descendant of King David (i.e. before wedlock)? Or, perhaps most crucially, will react to Christ on His return "in the glory of the Father"? With compassion or condescension? Reverence or scorn? From the tone of Fr. O'Hanlon's letter, probably the latter.

Hurling stones in this manner gets the Cause of Christ nowhere. Christ's teachings of love, tolerance, kindness and genuine fellowship, on the other hand, can, sincerely practised, make of this troubled earth a heaven. - Yours, etc.,

High Road,
