Pope Francis and a humanitarian crisis

Sir, – Sometimes there are inspirational leaders who do extraordinary things at the most important of times ("Europe has responsibility to welcome migrants, says Pope Francis", April 18th).

I think Pope Francis is such a person by visiting the Greek island of Lesbos, demonstrating solidarity with so many vulnerable refugees, offering refuge to 12 Syrians, without a preference for any particular creed, and taking them with him on his journey home. Actions do speak louder than words. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – With all due respect to Pope Francis, in relation to the refugee crisis I’m sure he means well, but if you allow simple emotion to trump logic, what you get is not a solution but increased chaos. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Great prominence and praise are rightly given by the media to the visit by Pope Francis to refugees in Lesbos. Our bishops could be more supportive of the leadership of the Holy Father in this vast humanitarian crisis. I wrote to the hierarchy some weeks ago suggesting that vacant religious convents and centres could be made available as homes for refugees. –Yours, etc,
