Sir, – Jim Callan's reference to how Germany and Austria manage speed limits (Letters 19/2/2015) and his plaintive cry as to "why we never look at best practice elsewhere for solutions" is easily explained. Best practice is not good enough for us, we have to have a "world class system" This is exemplified by the ongoing saga that is the search for a Postcode system that has cost us nearly €27 million to date and was promised to be fully operational by 2008. It wasn't enough to adapt a system used by any of our European neighbours, we had to reinvent the wheel and come up with our own unique system. Even the title "postcode" wasn't good enough for us we had to adopt the absurd hybrid Eircode. The latest launch date of "early spring 2015" has been postponed again by the latest Minister for Communications, Alex White. This whole programme has turned from a farce into a fiasco.
Yours faithfully, BRENDAN MCMAHON Naas Co Kildare
