Poverty In Ireland

Sir, - It is often said that the INTO and the Catholic Church have great power in this country. If they have, they are not using it, judging by the UN report showing that we have the highest functional illiteracy rate in the developed world and a higher proportion of people living in poverty than any other industrialised country outside the US (The Irish Times, July 10th).

Teachers strike for higher pay and bishops talk about low church attendance. Surely both are now faced with bigger moral issues.

As an ex-member of the INTO and still a member of the Catholic Church I ask myself: are we really an educated Christian country? - Yours, etc.,
