Sir, - Rory Lehane (January 15th) wonders about the safety of power steering. As a driver with a varied and accident-free mileage behind me, which has included some of the major motorways of Europe, and many of the Alpine passes, I have no reservations about power steering. It is wonderful for parking in tight spots; at high speed the car can be "pointed" more accurately; and is less stressful in congested traffic.
Power steering does make it easy to turn the wheels at the front when stationary, but this should not be done as it will scrub the tyres and cause excessive wear. Otherwise, I consider there is no problem with power steering. - Yours, etc., Douglas McCowen, (IAM AND RoSPA),
