Prescott's Punch

Sir, - It was refreshing to see Mr John Prescott's reaction to the egg-thrower in Wales on Wednesday night. Just when we were tired of the bland old New Labour spin, Mr Prescott reacts instinctively with a left hook! Simply great TV! Sartorially, he looked challenged; he displayed the gait of bookie walking home after a bad week at the Galway races; but at least he was natural! How would other British politicians have reacted to such a missile?

We can only speculate, but Tony Blair would probably have thanked the egg-thrower for affording him the opportunity to talk about the versatility of the egg - how it can be scrambled, boiled or fried - while reminding us of the fate awaiting William Hague.

Charles Kennedy, the Liberal Democrat leader, would have rejoiced had he been struck, as he would have finally realised his ambition of being recognised!

To William Hague it would have been just another egg: seen one and you've seen them all.
