PRESIDENT ROBINSON

Sir, - I think President Mary Robinson has been a wonderful President. She has brought light into so many people's lives, in so many ways. Nuala O'Faolain writes (March 13th) that Mrs Robinson, shortly after her inauguration, "went on Nodhlag na mBan - women's Christmas - to Mass with women prisoners".

Mrs Robinson never forgot her native county, Mayo. When she attended the "Spirit of Mayo" concert in the National Concert Hall (June 1993), to celebrate 5000 years of the Ceide Fields, she was dressed in red and green, her native county's colours.

President Robinson has been a great ambassador for this country, charming, intelligent and elegant. Lara Marlowe writes (March 13th) that when she was saying good-bye to President Jacques Chirac at the Elysee Palace (1996), the sun suddenly burst through the rain clouds. Mr Chirac told Mrs Robinson that she had brought the sun out. - Yours, etc.,
