Sir, - I refer to both Prof McEvoy's and Father Faul's reactions to President McAleese's taking of Communion at Christ Church (The Irish Times, December 13th). Prof McEvoy speaks of scandal.
Frankly, I find their attitudes scandalous. I am a practicing Catholic and applaud what she did. These priests may be literally correct in their interpretation of the rules but I think that is one of the biggest problems with the Church. The over-emphasis on rules shows a lack of what is most essential: spirituality. It lacks heart, love and compassion.
To them it seems that most important thing is to abide by law. I would simply ask: "What about the Spirit?" - Yours, etc.,
