Sir, – I note from Harry McGee’s front-page article of July 10th that the Cabinet has rejected the constitutional convention’s “recommendation that ordinary citizens have a role in the nomination process in a presidential election”. The Government feels, a source informs us, “that the current system where nominations are made through elected representatives is a democratic process”. Is this type of restricted democracy not part of the Government’s justification for the abolition of the Seanad?
No Seanad and a restricted nomination process for the presidency? The picture is becoming clearer. – Yours, etc,
