Madam, - I write concerning an incorrect statement concerning Sean Scully and prices paid for his work in "The Arts" page (April 3rd).
His paintings, rather than selling for between $60,000 - $100,000, as stated by your correspondent, have actually sold for in excess of $600,000 at auction and for well over $1,000,000 privately. This information can be confirmed by contacting Christie's or Sotheby's auctioneers or the Tim Taylor Gallery in London, where his recent exhibition was a sell-out.
I don't wish to be a know-all but when we are lucky enough to have an Irish painter of international stature, as Sean Scully is, it is best to get the facts right re the correct pricing of his work.
Why even bad Markey Robinsons are nearly making $60,000 - $100,000 these days! - Yours, etc.,
DAMIEN MATTHEWS, Brechin Place, London, SW7 4QA.
