Problems with property tax

A chara, – There is a local property tax waiver proposed for all unfinished areas of new housing estates. However, for those of us living in rural areas with fewer services – no public sewers, no public water supply, no public lighting, no broadband, no footpaths, no public libraries, no public playgrounds and poor quality county roads – there is no waiver.

We are expected to pay for services that we don’t have while at the same time providing those very same services for ourselves at a considerable cost.

I agree with paying for services provided based on a rate of use, but paying flat rates for services whether you live in Dublin 4 or the Black Valley is mindless and lazy taxation.

The Government is only introducing these lazy taxes to comply with instructions from Europe and is not giving due consideration to the real meaning of the polluter pays principle, upon which all of these taxes are supposed to be based. – Is mise,

A chara,- While many oppose the implementation of a property tax, spare a thought for those living in some areas of Dublin Central and elsewhere across the State who have had their houses flooded on a number of occasions and who simply cannot obtain house insurance. Despite such a ludicrous situation these house owners must still pay the proposed property tax.

The Government needs to address this matter urgently by introducing a State-sponsored house insurance scheme. Under no circumstances should houseowners with no house insurance be required to pay the property tax. – Is mise,
