Sir, - I was quite surprised and disappointed to see in your front-page report of May 31st about Aer Lingus and Mr Michael Foley that you quoted directly the profanity used by Mr Foley. It is a shamed that the offending F-word was not edited out, or indicated by asterisks; and was it necessary to even print the quotation in question?

It seems all our media, especially television, think that including profanity adds quality and substance. I think not, and would hope in future that your paper would return to the high editorial standards that set it out from the others. - Yours, etc.,

Mark Bonham, Church Street, Dublin 7.

Mr Foley's words in this report were direct speech. The use of asterisks would not have altered the import of what he said. - Ed, IT.
