Sir, – In Kathy Sheridan's interesting profile of Pearse Doherty ("Fair play is what makes me tick", August 15th)he says: "Every Easter, I go out and remember those men and women who gave their lives for Irish freedom and they go right up to the present day."
Can Mr Doherty tell us what he means by the last nine words in this sentence?

Sir, – In her sympathetic interview with Pearse Doherty, Kathy Sheridan blames her four-and-a-half hour journey from Dublin to Gaoth Dobhair on the “staggering amount of farm machinery” on the roads.
But farm machinery is the solution not the problem.
The problem is the government’s decision to cancel the A5 road link from the capital to Ireland’s most deprived county.
Donegal people have the lowest income and the least chance of employment. The lack of a dual carriageway to Dublin can only entrench the deprivation in this isolated county.
– Yours, etc,
Dr JOHN DOHERTY
Gaoth Dobhair,
Co Dhún na nGall.
