Sir, - Following the Government's mid-term review, as reported by Mark Brennock (July 27th), I have come to the conclusion that the Government is suffering from a serious ailment called the "We're Great Virus" (WGV). WGV compels its host to spout on about glorious (past) economic achievements even though it sits apathetically in an overheating economy. It makes governments cry about upholding high standards in public office even though opacity rules and corrupt politicians are let off the hook due to silly comments by others to journalists. It also claims success in laying foundations for lasting peace in Northern Ireland, despite sectarian attacks every other day and a mass exodus every July.
There is an effective treatment for WGV. It's called an election. It tends to eradicate egotistical governments who are out of touch with reality. - Yours, etc,
Arthur Lynch, Beech Hill Road, Dublin 4.
