Madam, - When I came to live in our small housing estate a good few years ago there was a large grass area along the top of the estate. Dividing this grass from the road was a thorn hedge which had been lovingly grown to four feet high. Down the centre of the main road outside was a line of tall, mature trees which were beautiful in each season of the year.
Now the grass has been reduced by two-thirds, the thorn hedge is being replaced by a six-foot stone wall and all the trees have been removed to make a wider, faster main road.
All this, of course, is in the name of progress. - Yours, etc.,
MONICA GRAY, Shanganagh Vale, Loughlinstown, Dublin 18.
