Madam, - Further to David Sowby's letter of complaint regarding RTÉ mispronunciation of the name of the current German chancellor (September 22nd), I find it grating on the ears to hear RTÉ's sports commentators regularly mispronouncing the names of two world-class Spanish golfers, - Olazábal and Jiménez. The emphasis is on the syllables that have the accents. It's not rocket science. - Yours, etc,

F CRONIN, Malahide, Co Dublin.

Madam, - While I am sure Ian Kavanagh (September 26th) would surely have been an asset to RTÉ given his considerable skill in modern languages, I don't think he should use BBC broadcasters as a great example of pronunciation ability.

Does anyone recall Messrs Paul McGrath and Kevin Moran, to name but two Irishmen who enjoyed long careers in England yet were rarely referred to correctly?

There is no doubt that RTÉ commentators could improve, but perhaps they are not the only ones. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Loman Ó Loingsigh (September 26th) wants to know what my name rhymes with. He could try Amen - so be it. - Yours, etc,

DAVID SOWBY, Knocksinna Crescent, Dublin 18.
