Madam, – I refer to the “new” pronunciation by some RTÉ newscasters and presenters.
The sound “or”, for example, often becomes “oar” or “ore” as in “good moarning” (“mourning!”), “Oar-tee-ee”, “Coarke”, the “Noarth” a “woarning”, “foarty”, etc. A prominent presenter refers to the “nooze”, “noozepaper”, “noo”, shopping in “Noory”! One wonders how the word “pew” would be pronounced.
The same presenter ignores the H in words like “when”, “which”, “where”, “why”, “what”, etc. Common mispronunciations are “vergeon” (version), “avergeon” (aversion), “divergeoin”, etc.
Would politicians and others take note that there is no such place as “the Dawl”, nor political party called “Feena Fawl”! – Yours, etc,
