Madam, - Jack Fagan's report on property developer Seán Dunne's address to the annual dinner of the Society of Chartered Surveyors, states that Mr Dunne asserted, apparently in the context of home ownership, that "those who can afford to have more than one property have rights also" and that these rights should not be infringed (The Irish Times, February 4th).
Even accepting that this gentleman was preaching to the converted, I would suggest that his remarks can be considered crass and insensitive by the very many people who have been unable to get a foot on the property ladder.
While these people too obviously have rights to own a home, for very many this right is simply not exercisable because of the current costs of buying a home.
I would therefore suggest that all interested parties, including property developers, engage in an immediate investigation to determine why this right to own a home is being so seriously infringed - and in particular to discover where the responsibility of this situation lies. - Yours, etc,
TONY TAAFFE, Main Street, Finglas, Dublin 11.
