Madam, - No one in their right mind could now deny that the "victory" over Saddam Hussein was a pyrrhic one. Iraq is in the throes of a de facto bloody civil war. The belief and hope that Sunni, Shia and Kurd could one day live together in some kind of Western-style democracy was all pie in the sky.
One day (God, let's hope it's soon!) the carnage will stop; but the entity that was once Iraq will cease to exist; it will be partitioned along ethnic lines. So was the invasion really worthwhile? The question is purely rhetorical, because deep down we all know the answer. - Yours, etc,
PAUL DELANEY, Beacon Hill, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
