Protecting sex workers

A chara, – The Rev Donal Dorr (“The new reality of prostitution has to be addressed by a change in the law”, Rite & Reason, July 16th ) tells us that nowadays women in poor countries are lured to Ireland where they are held prisoners in rooms where they are forced to provide sex services. The Irish criminal code already empowers the Garda to prosecute those who confine individuals in this situation. Our immigration laws similarly enable authorities to deal severely with those involved in human trafficking.

Rev Dorr does not acknowledge that there are men and women in Ireland who have freely chosen this occupation. Surely, the obvious solution is to apply rigorously the existing laws to protect the vulnerable and to legalise and regulate the provision of sex services to protect those who wish to be employed in this service industry. – Is mise,
