Sir, - Kevin Myers (April 9th) refers to seven Irish Protestant soldiers from different families. Here, around Clonmel, there were seven generals from the same family - the Goughs.

In four successive generations, five of them became Knights Grand Cross of the Bath, the highest military order; and in their last two generations three won the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration. They first gained distinction as churchmen who included a 17th century Bishop of Limerick and a 19th century Dean of Derry. - Yours, etc.,
