Sir, – Following John Coman’s comments (Letters, May 21st), the Church of Ireland respects the spirit of inclusivity and diversity that characterises Trinity College Dublin. It further acknowledges that this holds around the entry of all students to the university, whether of any religious affiliation or of none.
I wish to express regret for any misunderstanding regarding remarks made at the recent General Synod of the Church of Ireland regarding Trinity College Dublin and its willingness to register students from Protestant religious traditions seeking to become primary level teachers.
Matters concerning Trinity College Dublin and the Church of Ireland College of Education have been resolved amicably and graciously for the future in the agreed joint statement by the provost of Trinity College and the archbishop of Dublin signed on March 28th, 2013 and available since then on the websites of both institutions.
The Church of Ireland continues to wish Trinity College well in all aspects of its delivery of university education in Ireland and internationally. I further wish to express gratitude for the many ways in which we both have enriched and enhanced each other’s contribution to Irish society throughout its history. – Yours, etc,
Most Rev Dr MICHAEL
JACKSON,
Archbishop of Dublin and
Glendalough,
Church of Ireland House,
Church Avenue,
Rathmines, Dublin 6.
