Madam, - Brendan Cafferty (October 21st and 25) is entitled to his views and, while we disagree with him, we respect his right to air them as he has done.
But readers should be aware that he is not a local: his address is in Ballina more than 40 miles away from the Rossport area. Many people from Ballina and other areas support the real locals in the Rossport area, objecting to the environmental damage being inflicted on our beautiful landscape which is, incidentally, listed as a National Heritage Area (NHA). We very much welcome their support and appreciate wholeheartedly their messages of goodwill to the campaigners in Rossport and beyond.
Development by Shell and associated corporate giants continues to be carried out in secret and behind State protection with no evidence of accountability or of the openness and transparency to which we are entitled. We do not know by whose authority this is being administered and if anyone, in the national interest, is monitoring construction which has seen over 80 lorries a day loaded with what appears to be quarry rubble and concrete being dumped behind the cordoned-off 400 acre site.
Locals here are very concerned and are trying to get accountability and honesty but are being blackguarded at every turn. We need help to save our health, environment and future in the Rossport, Bellanaboy, Glengad, Glenamoy and Pollatomais areas. - Yours, etc,
TERENCE CONWAY, Inver, Barnatra; SEAN McANDREW, Glengad; TREASA NÍ GHEARRAIGH, Gleann na Muaidhe; RAY CORDUFF, Rossport, (on behalf of Shell to Sea local residents).
