Madam, – Dr   Michael Corry’s humane appraisal (January 6th) of the underlying dynamics associated with shortfalls in psychiatric care merits full absorption by all. Recent commentaries in your paper regarding the state of mental health provision have highlighted the many gross and fundamental deficiencies. Dr Corry widens and deepens this illumination.

Advocating individual, community and societal responsibility, in conjunction with statutory imperatives, Dr Corry gives us all something to ruminate on and act on.

The innovative therapeutic perspectives and transformations envisaged in the Vision for Change (2006) policy document should be honoured in spirit and to the letter. We must ensure that vested interests relax their professional squeeze on genuine change, with capital funding being urgently streamlined for the most appropriate and respectful facilities.

Silence is not a healthy option for any of us. We cannot allow this issue fade into the shadow of recessionary angst. Our humanity credentials are at stake. –   Yours, etc,
