Madam, - The really scary statistic in the ESRI report is that public sector workers are paid on average 20 per cent more than those in the private sector (The Irish Times, January 31st). Why was this allowed to happen?
Let me guess. Governments are advised by civil servants. It would require heroic self-restraint on the part of a civil servant to advise that he should be paid less.
The long-term problem is, of course, that our brightest graduates will gravitate towards the most financially rewarding careers, leaving the productive sector in the hands of the second-rate. Unsustainable. - Yours, etc,
