Madam, – After many years and much expenditure, Lord Saville’s report on the shootings in Northern Ireland on Bloody Sunday 1972 was submitted. Publication was delayed because the recent United Kingdom general election, so it was alleged, made the presentation of his lordship’s findings inopportune.
A date has now been set for publication. The text should be published in its entirety – objections on specious grounds of “national security” notwithstanding. The coming Papal visit cannot be regarded as a reasonable excuse for yet more prevarication concerning a shameful episode in the history of the United Kingdom.
– Yours, etc,
