Madam, – Alan Dukes, chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, said in relation to the massive pay packages still in effect there: “The salary level had to be adequate to attract people of the required calibre” (April 6th).

Given that Anglo is now a bank without any deposits, or any lenders, and which has now been nationalised, it is debatable whether calibre costing the State more than €900,000 per annum is really needed to run what remains of the institution.

In fact, it’s difficult to see why the public exchequer needs to pay €127,000 per annum for a chairman to write letters of complaint to national newspapers whenever people raise such questions. And such thoughts are all the more puzzling when considering just how cheaply a liquidator could wrap up whatever curious business is still going on in the silent husk of Anglo Irish Bank. – Yours, etc,
