Putting brakes on cyclists

Sir, – My advice to Fintan O’Toole (Opinion, June 11th) and those who think like him is to give up your auld sins. Cycling is fun, economical, stress-busting and healthy and I will be more than happy to welcome you into its ever-growing ranks.

Next time a smiling cyclist zips past you as you sit in traffic, curse them not, but rather resolve to be one in future. – Yours, etc,

GARRET LEDWITH,

Sir, – My balcony overlooks a busy traffic junction in the centre of Vienna.

While reading Frank McNally’s plea for peace on the roads (An Irishman’s Diary, June 13th) in response to Fintan O’Toole’s broadside against cycling miscreants (Opinion, June 11th), I watched the police issuing €70 on-the-spot fines to everyone ignoring a red light.

No motorists transgressed, but two well-dressed young women pedestrians and 43 cyclists were accosted.

I predict that this zero tolerance of cycling delinquency will have a dramatic effect – to monitor the outcome, your columnists are welcome to join me for Kaffee und Kuchen and enjoy the spectacle. – Yours, etc,
