Sir, - An Taisce wishes to support recent correspondence from Mary Bryan of the Irish Georgian Society concerning PVC windows. It is evident that nothing that can be said about their visual tackiness can deter the nationwide manic replacement with PVC factory-style top-hung windows of original timber sash windows.
What is not well known is that PVC as a potentially toxic, dioxin-producing material, has adverse public health and environmental effects. I note that the Sydney Olympic games is a PVC-free zone and that a campaign is under way to undermine Britain's Millennium Dome in Greenwich because of the use of PVC in its roof - on health rather than aesthetic grounds. - Yours, etc.,
