Quality Bus Corridors

Sir, - I was appalled by the tone of Conor McCarthy's letter. May I remind the Chairman of the DTO that this is meant to be a democracy? We have ever worsening traffic, yet the DTO has chosen to impose these draconian QBCs under the influence of Dublin Bus. Why are Dublin motorists not properly represented or consulted with regard to finding an acceptable solution?

As a Dublin motorist may I suggest the following:

There should be one transport authority, customer driven, and with absolute autonomy.

The first duty of the authority should be to fast-track the roads infrastructure which is a quarter of a century overdue.

In tandem with this, the authority would regulate a public transport system so efficient that a huge percentage of us would not want to use our cars. The bus and DART services would have to be opened up immediately to quality private operators. We may as well concede that CIE/Dublin Bus is never going to provide the service we need despite new names, new colour schemes and more of our millions on new buses.

The authority would also oversee the policing of the system. Car tax would be collected on the purchase of fuel, saving millions in time, congestion and administration. Most importantly, the policing system would be customer-orientated, focusing efficiently on road works, safety, maintenance, etc. - Yours, etc.,
