Race for the White House

Sir, – The news of Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, along with the recent announcements of Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, means we are now heading into the circus of the US presidential election more than 18 months out from the actual election date.

The US workforce contains a huge proportion of working poor. Their interests will not feature prominently in the secret arrangements made in the corridors of power between unaccountable lobbyists and the candidates. In fact, corporate interests will ensure that the subject of the working conditions of the electorate will not feature but will instead be drowned out by red herrings such as gun freedom and terrorism.

The coming 18 months will be compelling and entertaining but as we hear the noble rhetoric of the candidates, we should be aware that the reality of US democracy is one that is framed by moneyed interests rather than the ordinary voter. – Yours, etc,

BARRY WALSH,
