Sir, – Barry Walsh's (April 15th) analysis of the upcoming American presidential election bears an extraordinary parallel with our own upcoming general election. He says that the US workforce contains a huge proportion of working poor. Tick. He asserts that their interests will not feature prominently in the corridors of power. Tick. He also says that the subject of working conditions of the electorate will not feature. Tick. He further says that the coming months will be compelling and entertaining as we hear the noble rhetoric of candidates. Tick. And finally the reality of democracy is one that is framed by moneyed interests rather than the ordinary voter. Tick. It appears we move ever closer to our Atlantic cousins. – Yours, etc,
