Sir, - Kevin Myers tells us that "common sense and common experience tell us that the most virulently violent racists are members of the working class". He thus concludes that the left's supposed insistence that "racism is the invention of capitalism or of some malign political establishment" is erroneous.

Mr Myers can hardly deny that racism is more prevalent under some political establishments than others. And if the correlation between racism and relative wealth which he points out genuinely exists, then neither can we deny that our political and economic systems, which determine the distribution of wealth, contribute to the problem. - Yours, etc.,
