Sir, - The extent of racism in this country is worrying, and surprising when one considers our emigrant history, our open and outward-looking economy and our supposedly Christian moral values. Racism in all its forms must be denounced - but where it emerges in the field of sport and where it is associated with those awarded the honour of representing their country the stakes are raised and mere denunciation is hardly an adequate response.

The Graham Geraghty incident has left a stain on the current International Rules contest and demands a more decisive response than a seven-day suspension. The GAA, as the premier sports organisation on this island, and one founded on the premise of promoting and supporting the activities which enrich the culture of the nation, must be encouraged to demonstrate that such incidents will not be tolerated. In the opinion of this writer the player should be removed from the squad forthwith. - Yours, etc., Paul Finnerty,
