Sir, - Via television, Irish people have, over the years, witnessed the horrors of commuter rail tragedies. I now implore Iarnrod Eireann and train staff to examine the commuter service that they operate on the Drogheda to Dublin line. The rapid urban sprawl from Dublin City that has extended to North Co Dublin and Co Louth has placed unprecedented demands on an outdated rail system. A planning application has been submitted to upgrade this line to a high quality Arrow commuter service but the earliest this can be implemented will be 2002.
Please, please, please put your industrial relations disputes aside for long enough to examine this service. The volumes of passengers and the age of the rolling stock are a rail tragedy waiting to happen! - Yours, etc.,
Karen Greany, Hazel Lane, Bryanstown, Co Louth.
