LIAM O GEIBHEANNAIGH,
Sir, - It might be better if opinion leaders such as Garret FitzGerald (January 5th) called attention to the concerns which led to the rejection of the Nice referendum, rather than seeking to rubbish the result. I don't think I am alone in wanting action on the issues which inclined me to vote No, before a re-run is conducted.
Does Dr FitzGerald recognise the democratic deficit which denies the Irish electorate a say in the development of important EU policies?
Surely we should not endorse a situation whereby important decisions are taken without first being considered by the Dáil! Ireland is indebted to John Rogers SC for casting light on the present intolerable situation.
Given present citizenship and residency loopholes, how can Dr FitzGerald advocate a vote for an expanded EU before our law and Constitution are amended? The fact that the present Government has neglected its duty is no reason why the Irish electorate should endorse the crazy situation.
Unless these issues are satisfactorily addressed by the new Government, I will again say "No" to Nice, and consider that I am defending Ireland's interests in doing so. - Is mise,
LIAM Ó GÉIBHEANNAIGH,
Áth an Ghainimh,
Co Átha Cliath.
