Sir, - Mr McCreevy's attempt to expand labour supply by enticing mothers to rejoin the workforce is not only grossly unfair and unpopular but shows no grasp of reality, constitutionality or the needs of the economy. The workers this economy needs are the young, highly skilled and motivated individuals who left this country in the 1980s and early 1990s. How about enticing them (and their money) back to the old country? How about the youth of Spain, Germany and France with their university degrees and multi-lingual skills who cannot get jobs in their own countries ?
This is where we need to look for new labour supplies - not by breaking up families. To actively discriminate against families who aspire to the ideals espoused in our Constitution is quite unbelievable, especially from the party whose founding fathers drafted that document. I have a feeling that Mr McCreevy (and his wife) will be looking for a new job after the next election! - Yours, etc., Ed French,
