JOHN O'SHEA,
Sir, - In the 25 years of GOAL's existence it is very seldom that I have returned from a visit to anywhere in the developing world with anything resembling hopeful feelings. More often than not my mood has been one of despondency and frustration.
However, I am glad to say that for once, having just visited East Timor, I have cause for encouragement. The few days I spent there have renewed my faith in the ability of a once impoverished people, when left in peace and with appropriate international help, to set about rebuilding their lives.
Now that the terrible years of oppression, violence and abuse of their human rights at the hands of the Indonesians are over, the East Timorese are determined to put their devastated country back into some semblance of order. The job will be long and arduous, and they will require help for many years.
With support from the Irish public and funding from various donors, GOAL is helping in this job by rebuilding clinics, schools and houses.
I was really delighted to see so much excellent work being done and I would like to thank the public for their continued support. Without it our work could not continue - and continue it must. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN O'SHEA,
