A chara, - I refer to a report in your edition of August 19th concerning the Inis Mór recycling scheme. This took over four years from conception to implementation, between research, funding and construction, not six months. Several people worked extremely hard, not least the waste management consultants M.C. O'Sullivan, to bring the project to completion.

It is therefore regrettable that the article concentrated on initial teething problems and failed to give an updated account of the success story the project has become.

Since the introduction of the scheme in June, over 15 tons of food and biodegradable waste has been diverted from landfill through the central composting scheme, plus several tons of plastic, glass, cans, paper and cardboard.
