REFERENDUM AFTERMATH

BRENDAN M. REDMOND,

BRENDAN M. REDMOND,

Madam, - Now that the Nice Treaty has been put to bed there is, nevertheless, some tidying up to be done to restore the country to its former pristine (?) condition.

I refer to the large number of posters still hanging from lampposts all over the place.

I have a message for both sides of the campaign.

Yes, we do want all posters removed without further delay.

No, we are not prepared to accept any excuses for this unacceptable behaviour. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - The vast majority of the Irish people who voted Yes for the ratification of the Nice Treaty should give themselves a congratulatory clap on the back.

They have shown that, when informed properly, they will vote for the common good because of their high standards of morals and not for self-interest or silly abstract notions.

With the help of God, people like Justin Barrett will fade like snow on a ditch into political insignificance where they belong.

I feel honoured to be an Irishman when I read that the people of Poland saluted with us pints of Guinness when we expressed our solidarity by voting Yes for the unification of Eastern and Western Europe, thus giving the applicant nations the right to develop and prosper.

Our ancestors will rest well in their graves knowing that the Irish still have their Irishness. - Yours, etc.,

DEAGLAN POLLARD, Swords, Co Dublin.
