Sir, - Reports in the media continually refer to "winning" or "losing" referendums, such as those on the Nice Treaty and on abortion.
Surely, when it comes to gauging the opinion of the people of the country, there are no "winners" or "losers". I would think that the idea of putting a decision to a referendum is to find out exactly what the people of the country want. If the result is contrary to the idea being promoted by the government, then the people have spoken.
Should the media not be reporting in terms of results, rather than victory or defeat? - Yours, etc.,
