Madam, - Seán Ó Loinsigh (Letters, October 31st), in seeking to reform the composition of Seanad Éireann, manages to ignore one simple fact. The current mechanism of electing the Seanad significantly discriminates against the Dublin region.

Co Leitrim, with a population of 27,000, has 22 Seanad votes through county council membership votes. My electoral ward of Pembroke, with a population of 32,000, has three Seanad votes. The city of Dublin, with a population of over 500,000 has 52 votes through the city council electorate. So by all means let us have reform of the Seanad and fairer representation. But let it be just that - real reform and fair representation. - Yours, etc,

Cllr DERMOT LACEY, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
