A chara, - I must take issue with Monsignors Faul and Murray (November 21st) when they express great respect for the RUC and go on to call for the urgent reform of that force. The predominant attitude to the RUC among nationalists that I know is not one of respect but of fear and anger and is expressed in terms of outright hostility. These attitudes are the result of years of being humiliated by members of this force at checkpoints, during house searches and in interrogation centres. They have been compounded by the actions of the RUC on Garvaghy Road during the past number of years.

As a founding member of Cearta, A Charter for Change - a newly formed nationalists' rights group - I would be calling for the total and immediate disbandment of the RUC and its immediate replacement by an unarmed and accountable police service in each of the Six Counties taking account of the make-up of the population in different areas. - Is mise,
