Regulating charities

Sir, – Why are charities that get Government funding not properly regulated?

It has always amazed me why there is a need for so many charities in Ireland to support hospitals, people with disabilities and those with special needs. In a caring and modern society, this should be taken care of by a proper health service. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – Character and codes of conduct both play a part in encouraging ethical behaviour. When I look at recent financial scandals in many sectors, it would seem that an absence of character or a lapse in character is invariably met by a call for additional codes. Ironically, the imposition of these codes is more often than not an extra bureaucratic burden on those who have shown themselves to be of good character, rather than a meaningful reprimand to those who have misbehaved. – Is mise,
