Sir, In response to Andy Pollack's article. "Handful of dissenters unlikely to threaten Breathnach's plan" (May 14th). I am one of those "dissenters". I am writing to protest at Andy Pollack's use of the terms "conservative Catholics" and "right wing Catholic fringe", to describe those of us who are opposed to the RSE programme for primary schools.

Teachers and others opposed to the RSE programme are not asking for their stance to be lauded by the media, but I certainly think that our deep concerns should not be held up to ridicule. Now that we have entered the post Christian era in Ireland, must we be apologetic for being grateful and proud of our Irish Christian heritage - a heritage whose recognised culture has influenced Europe throughout the ages and indeed throughout the whole world?

I would have hoped for a more balanced report from such an intelligent journalist, given the fact that the implementation of the RSE programme is of such crucial importance for our future education system. - Yours, etc.,
